Carbon-Carbon Coposites

Carbon-Carbon (C-C) composites are carbon fibers bonded together with a carbon matrix and carbonized.  In air, they are suitable for high temperatures to 750F (400C) in continuous service and to 900F (480C) intermittently when impregnated with our oxidation protection system.  C-C performs best when protected by an inert environment where it can operate to ultra-high temperatures 3600F (2000C).  Special heat treating can enable use to 5070F (2800C).  Examples of protective inert environments are in a vacuum, in a gas bath (i.e. nitrogen-hydrogen, argon, etc.), or submerged in molten metals.

C-C composite is 75% stronger at 4350F (2400C) than at zero degrees and can be a potential replacement to Inconel, Molybdenum (‘moly’), Hastelloy and alloys that warp, crack, or weaken in service.

C-C is thermal shock resistant relative to alumina, ceramic and silicon carbide.  C-C has an extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) suitable for satellite and space frame assemblies with good heat transfer emissivity.  Atmosphere considerations are critical, however.  C-C composite are available as 17” sheets or 24” discs up to 5” thick.
