Since unveiling the Hawk Performance sponsored Audi R8 this spring at the Long Beach Grand Prix, Mike Skeen of CRP Racing has climbed to the top of the Pirelli World Challenge series championship standings.
Skeen was the fastest during last weekend’s practice session at Sonoma . The Hawk Performance Audi R8 was quick, quick enough to capture pole position Saturday morning for the first race of the weekend. At the drop of the green flag, the Audi sprinted away from the rest of the field and maintained the lead for the remainder of the race as Skeen flashed across the finish line.
With the win behind them there was little time to celebrate; the second race of the weekend was just 24 hours away. The CRP Team went to work freshening and preparing the Audi for Sunday’s race. Starting in the fifth position and right behind the Cadillac that Mike was now only 11 points behind in the championship, Mike mashed the throttle to the floor at the drop of the green flag. Each and every lap was a battle, that battle had consequences… After rubbing fenders with the Cadillac, damage was done to the Hawk Performance Audi R8. Not quitting, Mike and the CRP team put their head down and continued on, ending up one lap down and in nineteenth place.
With one weekend and two races left in the 2014 Pirelli World Challenge series, Mike Skeen and the Hawk Performance Audi R8 are now only 42 points behind the big, factory backed Cadillac team. If this weekend’s racing is any indication of what those final races have in store it is going to be a championship that will be remembered.
